Unicode display problems

Currently, non-ascii characters do not display within widgets, despite having installed Noto CJK and applying font-family to the relevant widget. I have verified that the font works elsewhere (e.g. kitty, Firefox) but I still get the Unicode code point boxes in eww. Is this an eww-specific issue or is it something with, for example, my gtk config?
