buderus boiler freezed with double dash (--) error #2379

after connecting (with original service jack) bbqkees ems gateway e32 v2 to buderus logamax gb072 boiler is repeatedly (few days interval) falling to freezed state with double dash (--) error and only turning it off and on again could be performed (no buttons, no gateway disconnection, no nothing works). gateway also does not send any usable data to home assistant but i have debug syslog fragment from this event interval. it was in the middle of the night, there was no thermostat/boiler fiddling, so if you please are able to detect the source of the problem, it will be very helpful, as it makes tenant's flat completely cold since the event to the morning and as it is not for the first time, they're really pissed off :-(

I assume you are on a recent development firmware and not on 3.7.0, which had a memory leak which bricked up the Gateway after a while.

I think the EMS service port in the boiler may be giving an intermittent connection.
The Buderus GB072 has the same front panel as my own Nefit Trendline.
So I know from experience that it has a very 'loose' EMS service port. It is also a bit recessed so you have to insert the cable properly.

If you can revert to the screw terminal again to see if that solves it.
In the mean time I can send you a new EMS service cable to rule out the issue is with the cable itself.

tried latest firmware, it was running smooth approx a week and then this. i think cable is fitted at its max, but can only validate it visually...

i can tolerate if the connection drops and the gateway stop sending data (to HA), but this completele freezes the boiler (and the flat as well), which is after this last event unacceptable - can loose cable or similar issue produce such heavy boiler failure?

when i had it connected to screw terminal, it stops communication after day or two as well, but instead of freezing whole boiler, it produced EMS comm failure error (which in the end leads to safety mode on boiler and frozen flat as well)

so i think, if there is no other way than retries, i had to wait to summer when the boiler is not needed 100% functional

The dash-dash code is a complete loss of communication on the bus. A not fully plugged in service key can short circuit the bus lines with exact this effect and complete communication stop. A lose contact will only give communication issue to one device.
But if you also tried with screw terminal and also have sometimes communication isssues, you should check all bus lines to all modules.

understood. i have only one thermostat as a module, this boiler-thermostat double worked with no issues many years. now with using service jack it worked +-week with no issues in locked room, so no one touched the gateway or the service cable and after a week this double dash error occured from blue sky - can the cable loose itself (it was fitted as deep as it can go on both sides) by time?

about screw terminal - is it better to fit both ems twin wire from thermostat and from gateway into one twin terminal port? or is it better to use two wago connectors (https://www.wago.com/us/wire-splicing-connectors/compact-splicing-connector/p/221-413) which will both input one wire from thermostat and gateway and output one wire to screw terminal?

more to add, after this event and boiler restart, it has (again like in comm error when using wired screw terminal instead of service jack) disabled hot water for storage tank. didn't notice it, as there is slow temperature degradation in tank. i have to set it up in service menu, as it cannot be set just with direct hot water button on control panel. standard heating to radiators hasn't been affected. is this also expected behaviour? tenants are mad now :((

then EMS-ESP will not sent packets on the EMS bus, and will only be in listen mode.

it was in read only mode since it was installed and i checked it already after firmware update and still it disables hot water in each this (service cable/direct wiring) comm trouble

@voborl00 Let's swap out the Gateway for a new one before you run new tests.
I'll send one tomorrow, you can test with the new unit to see if it makes a difference.
If it does, you use the new one in your site and if it doesn't we excluded the hardware being an issue and have to look elsewhere for the cause. In the latter case you just return the second Gateway to me.
Did you connect DS18B20 sensors to it by chance?

@bbqkees please don't, as it is rented flat, i need to calm it down for a while and do not make any boiler outages again. i think i will proceed in summer (may at earliest) when there will be no need for heating and hot water.

what i have in plan is to reconnect it from service jack again back to wiring terminal, but my question, posted earlier, is because there are wires from thermostat in the input slot and not much space for additional wires from gateway - can i connect it in wago connector outside the boiler (so inputs will be from thermostat and gateway and single output from wago connector to wiring terminal) or it has to be connected (both thermostat and gateway) directly in the same slot in boiler wiring terminal?

i did not connect any other sensor or anything else - just power, lan cable and service jack/ems wiring.

You can split in the screw-terminals or use wagos in between. Each cable length from terminal to terminal or wago should be >20cm.
Use > 0.5mm^2 cables for all bus connections, The 2 bus lines should be parallel or twisted, and with distance to mains cables.
Try which connection give you lower rates of incomplete telegrams.

You have not posted the system info, so we don't know what is configured.
Ems-esp is a interface from ems-bus to mqtt/api/web, it just translates entities from one to another, but never changes something on the heating system without a vommand from api/mqtt. In readonly-mode no commands are sent to the bus (actually except remote thermostat emulation if configured).
If the dhw is disabled via ems-esp there is a) not readonly-mode configured and b) a command to disable dhw sent from your system (homeassistent or whatever you use),

So before connecting to the bus:

  • check ems-esp settings, or reset to default. Change settings only if you know what they do.
  • check homeassistant (or what system you use) and disable writes to ems-esp.
  • don't use special settings (force heating off, remote thermostat, mqtt publish to command) if you are unsure that you really need this.
