Hypothetical situation: I have a device that records data for a long period of time. At some point its image becomes corrupted and it loses the device token.
Right now it seems like the only option would be to either (a) change its id and add it as a new device, or (b) remove the old device and add/activate it again.
Neither situation allows me to bring the device back online with the same id without losing any of the data history. It would be very useful to have that ability.
