according to http://www.nongnu.org/espresso/, espresso-mode has been renamed to js-mode as of 23.2. I suspect that it was aliased for a while which is why we didn't have this problem earlier. Anyways, my Emacs 24.3.1 as shipped in Ubuntu 14.04 doesn't support espresso-mode. I got things to work by doing a replace-string of espresso to js in starter-kit-js.org.
