As I said, the YouTube sound works without problem when I use Chrome or Edge, but when I use Ghostery with CyberGhost, I get no sound at all, although the video is quite OK. The volume is definitely not muted; this was the obvious thing that even I checked first. I've also run a speaker test and the speaker works (peeps) perfectly: no fault was found.
It seems that something in my computer has decided that there shall be no sound when I open YouTube with Ghostery.
Weird! // <-- //

Have you tried turning off your VPN? Also, please check how things behave in a private browsing tab. It seems this issue might be influenced by YouTube's various tactics to counter adblockers. In your case, it could be connected to geolocation, which is being triggered specifically with our browser.
Please let us know how it goes—this is a very interesting case! // <-- //

I have tried all possible combinations using Ghostery: - with CyberGhost VPN, without CyberGhost VPN, and using private browsing with and without the CyberGhost VPN. In all cases, I get a video but no sound. It seems, as I said before, that something has got into my desktop computer that blocks YouTube sound when I use Ghostery. I also have a laptop (which obviously has the same geolocation) and which has CyberGhost and Ghostery installed, and that works perfectly.
As you say, a very interesting case. I hope that you can find a solution. I don't wish to cancel Ghostery. When it works properly, it's an excellent system. // <-- //

This is very interesting, and we will do our best to get to the root of your original problem. It seems the issue might be related to your audio setup, and I’d be happy to assist further. However, I need more information:
What sound card are you using?
Do you use any recording DAW software on your computer?
Do you use any sound-related online services where you record or upload audio files?
Are there any extra programs controlling your sound setup? // <-- //
User: // --> //
The sound card in my computer must be hidden or something. There are only two devices listed under Sound in the Device Manager - the speaker (which works) and the live cam video (also working).
I have no DAW software. (I had to look up what DAW is).
I don't use any sound related online services to record audio files, unless you count a 4K Video Downloader and a Bit Torrent, which are used for video files.
I don't have any extra programmes controlling sound set up as far as I know. // <-- //
Ghostery: // --> //
I still cannot reproduce the problem, so lets investigate more.
Have you checked your microphone and speaker options in the browser settings? To do so, open Ghostery Private Browser preferences by clicking the cogwheel at the end of the address bar.
In the "Search in settings" bar at the top, type "microphone." You should see two options: microphone and speaker selection. Please open both settings windows and ensure that YouTube is not restricted in either.
Have you tried reinstalling our browser? It's possible that something conflicted within the system. // <-- //

Hi again,
There's something wrong somewhere..
First, the Ghostery shortcut suddenly decided not to work and I was told that Ghostery had been changed or moved. I certainly hadn't changed or moved it, but in order to access it I downloaded Ghostery again.
As before, it worked with video only, no sound.
Following your advice, I next went into Ghostery's settings. There were no websites listed in the Speaker Permissions box that had requested permission to use the speaker. I therefore tried typing in YouTube and clicking Change. However, nothing happened and when I repeated the process, the box was again empty. No audio on YouTube.
I next went into Autoplay and found that all websites had permission to use Video and Audio. I clicked to confirm this - but again no sound, only video.
I continue to get audio without problems if I use Chrome or Edge,
What on earth can all this mean? // <-- //
