Is openmpi manually installed in /usr/local for a reason?

@nturaga added that piece of the puzzle so he may have more insight. It looks like the as long as it's on NFS, it's more of a personal preference: https://www.open-mpi.org/faq/?category=building#where-to-install

But I'm guessing that directory is not shared via NFS by default. Do you have a preference where it should be installed?

@tseemann it doesn't have to be in /usr/local . I agree with @afgane that its not shared via NFS.

It's unclear why you aren't able to use the Ubuntu/debian package for openMPI ?
it is too old?

@tseemann Back when I tried the debian package, there were errors during the install process, so I went with doing it manually. They might have fixed it now.
