OpenCitations nowadays has a rest api to get references (upstream) or citations (downstream) of a given pmid or doi: https://opencitations.net/index/api/v2#/citations/{id}
This could be used instead of downloading the full data dump of citations that's 171 GB for things like front end development or one-off lookups.
For high throughput analysis, we'd probably still want the full dump.
