The Design Systems (DS) team is composed of researchers and designers, working to help every HfLA team create their own design system that is robust, scalable, and based on sound design system paradigms.
Our initiatives have included:
- Auditing HfLA teams' use of Figma
- Writing style guides on design system best practices
- Interviewing HfLA volunteers to understand needs and pain points
- Designing component library Figma templates
You must complete HfLA onboarding, be available to attend our meetings, and speak with the current PM on Slack.
- All-hands meet Mondays 5:30-6:30pm PST
- Designers meet Thursdays 10:30-11:30am PST
- Researchers meet Thursdays 5-6pm PST
If you've done all of the above, you can submit an onboarding issue to begin your first tasks.

Hack for LA was a great resource for me as a recent UX bootcamp graduate with limited real world experience in the field. Thanks to HfLA, I was able to contribute to shipped products as well as collaborate with fellow designers, developers, and researchers. I was also fortunate to receive mentorship from PM Hana Stevenson, whose career advice was keen and invaluable. I can say with confidence that my work on the Design Systems project helped me land my new job as a Product Designer at Lumanu, where I will be taking lead on their design system!
