Blank space is shown between upper left vertical/horizontal viewports toolbars, if home button does not exist. Without it present, I think it's debatable if blank space is really necessary there.
If you look at the screenshots below, in AppUI 4, that specific upper left corner was looking a bit more natural without the blank space present - vertical toolbar was aligned to the top of the viewport before. I wonder if there is a setting to continue allowing similar behavior in AppUI 5, in case an app is not using home button.
