Switching to most modes silently fails

I have a weird little external display connected to an M1 Pro macbook. displayplacer lists the following:

Unfortunately, when I try to switch to any modes besides 0 or 1 it silently fails and stays in mode 0 or 1. I'd really like to switch to mode 9. It seems to run much quicker when selecting a mode other than 0 or 1.

Running MacOS 12.6.3 on a MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021)
