Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Event Information from 2011 to 2020 for the Scripps Pier in San Diego California

This project is part of the MEDS class EDS 213 - Metadata Standards, Data Modeling, and Data Semantics

For the purposes of this project we will be exploring the question: How have harmful algal blooms (HABs) changed since 2011 at the Scripps Pier?

Data Management

  1. How much data will be collected and how will it be treated?

    • Currently, three datasets are being used from the linked data from DataOne. The data has been collected into an .Rmd file to be evaluated using the metajam R 📦 (version 0.2.3 published 11/3/2020). The metajam github can be found here: https://nceas.github.io/metajam/
  2. How much time is needed to manage the data and who will be responsible for doing so?

    • The data is relatively manageable in size and should not take long to download. It took our group less than 20 minutes. Any member of the group can be contacted to explain this process.
    • The official contact for the raw dataset itself is Clarissa Anderson from the University of California, San Diego and can be contacted at: [email protected].
    • For the purposes of this project, any of the above authors can be contacted via the listed emails for more information.
  3. How long should the data be preserved and where is the best location to do so?

    • The raw data is preserved on DataOne and should be available indefinitely to the authors of this project's knowledge.
    • The dataset for this project, after joining and manipulation, is stored on the repository knb and is linked below.
  4. Are there any legal constraints associated with acquiring, using and sharing project data?

    • There are no known legal constraints in acquiring, using, or sharing the data associated with this project.

Data Analysis

  • For the purposes of our analysis our team explored how HAB events changed over time at the Scripps Pier location.
  • We produced the figure below showing showing total organism quantity per year in cells per liter.

  • If time or resources allow for future analysis we would recommend exploring more locations than just the Scripps Pier in San Diego. This could include making a map with information about HABs over time for each location. This could also include how each location compares in each year to identify patterns of changes in Southern California compared to Northern California.
