image navigation doesn't work from File Explorer?

When opening a single image, either from the built in File Explorer or another file manager app, it doesn't allow swiping left or right to move to the previous or next image in the folder.

This is such a common feature in photo galleries that I believe I must be doing something wrong, and I hope this can be considered a "support request" rather than a bug or new feature.

Swiping left & right to move to the next image in a folder only works from the "gallery view" with all the preview images... i.e an alphabetic list in which all the folder nesting visible in the File Explorer is flattened. Therefore, at least with my settings, the left & right swipe image navigation is mutually exclusive with the nested File Explorer (or opening a single image from any other app).

@kollerlukas if this project has been abandoned, I thank you for your time & effort, though I would still hope you or someone can post a workaround for this difficulty in the meantime.
