How to know which file it looks to find out which game it is?

Hi,

Installed v63 via Proton-Qt on Steam Deck. I'm trying to force it to download dxx-rebirth for Descent but when I set it's compatibility mode in Steam to Luxtorpeda and run, it opens up a dialogue box to choose an engine which doesn't have dxx-rebirth in it.

I tried adding the game manually to Steam but no matter the file I point it to, being Descentr.exe, Descent.bat, etc, it won't detect it and opens the same dialogue box. It's my first time using Luxtorpeda.

This looks for app ids for games that you own on Steam. Are you trying to use a non-steam game?

If so, you can look into the user-packages override (https://github.com/luxtorpeda-dev/luxtorpeda#user-packages-override), which allows you to set your own custom data for your non-steam game.

Thanks man, that made Luxtropeda to find the game but then logged some error about not finding correct hog file, I tried another version and same error. Not worth it anymore. Thank you so much for your time and patience. Best.

I decided to give it another go. I'm sure I'll regret it very soon. Anyway.

I saw the files the the json that luxtropeda is downloading for the game and since dxx-rebirth does not provide linux builds (apparently it's not possible due to virtually unlimited distros, beyond me) and I can't compile the source, I thought maybe grabbing those files would let me manually patch things up.

Long story short, it's now throwing error about SDL 2 not being present and since those are not addressed in the json file, probably are taken from a shared pool of files for all games, probably in this very repo. They are not in the descent folder.

Then I tried to run the game with Luxtropeda's comptability to see if I can get those files and thought to give you the error log file I get: link. It says it can't find some files which they are in the folder so this is the file list of the descent directory as well: link

The launch script expects the game assets to be in a sub-folder called "descent", since that's where they are in the steam release.

To work around that you could try copying your files into a sub directory called descent, then it could work.

So what was/is the correct way to do this? I set the comptability to Luxtorpeda, then run the game, change the json file, then create another folder and move files there based on the sh file?

Also, is it possible to run Descent 2 side by side since both are probably have app-id of "0"?

The normal way lux is used is with steam games, so non-steam games haven't really been tested.

For this particular game, the game files for your copy where in a different format then the ones from steam. That can vary, but it can be helpful to see. If you don't own the game on steam, you can use steamdb to see the directory structure.

You may want to try setting in launch options appids on steam, for example SteamAppId=123 %command% and see if lux sees that then you can set whichever ones you want and have multiple engines.
