R execution errors and no plots

sorry for this issue which was not one but only the consequence of a bad conda env.
I had R version conflicts in my existing conda env and creating a new env solved them all

conda create -n merqury -c conda-forge -c bioconda merqury openjdk=11

I removed my original issue content to avoid overloading this channel
thanks for the great tool

BTW: the current conda receipt (2023-11-16, with conda 23.10.0) does not install the advertised 1.4.1 version of meryl but 1.3 instead.
