How can I run the code inside mo.ui.code_editor in a cell?

Afaik, I can display the code inside the code_editor, but I couldn't find a way to execute the code in a cell. Is this possible?

hey, I believe mo.ui.code_editor functions more as a souped up text editor, not meant for running code directly.
You could use the native exec to run the code though (and maybe make the execution lazy)

code_editor = mo.ui.code_editor()

exec(code_editor.value)

Thanks for the reply! This seems to work to a point, but it seems like I need to have a print statement in the code editor for the cells to show any output, and I can't display any mo components (or anything that is not a string for that matter) using this method.

My main use case is trying to get generated code from an LLM to be added as a cell. I do this in Jupyter since it gives an API to access the cells and add, drop, run them on demand, but marimo doesn't seem to have one. Any thoughts on how one can get there?

Ah, interesting. There is an API for Cell but it doesn't offer the control that you envision.

I'm guessing you want to get the output of the LLM, replace/create a cell with that output, and run it.

Would you mind sharing some of those workflows or API using Jupyter? Maybe there are things we could add in marimo.
(searching jupyter api doesn't give me clear docs or reference 😅)

At its most basic, you get access to the entire panel, which allows you to modify the cells, add new ones (code or md), and run the entire notebook (or certain cells).
