People in transit
Dimension: Threats
Category: Human mobility
Population type: People in transit
Definition: It is the number of people observed in a territory transiting through it that aren't from that region. The population of interest for this indicator is people that pass through the area, not for working or education reasons. Only migration and displaced people should be counted.
Calculation: The indicator is calculated by expert consultation. The tool is a questionnaire that estimates the number of people transiting (administrative level 2).
1. How often there are people in human mobility transiting through the territory? (if the answer Never is selected, then it has 0 points. Otherwise, the points will depend on the next two questions)
- Very often (daily)
- Sometimes (a few days a week)
- Never (no days of the week)
2. On an average day, how many people in transit can be seen in the territory? (10 points) (skip logic - this question will appear just for the first two answers to question 1)
- Very few, at most one or two a day (0 points)
- Some, between 2 and 10 daily (5 points)
- Many, more than 10 people a day (10 points)
3. Can you estimate the average number of people that transit the region by week? (the answer is an estimated number)
The methodology for calculating this indicator is the sum of all the points assigned for each answer selected. There are two types of questions that lead to different aggregation of points:
- Single-choice questions: only the value of the chosen answer is counted.
- Multiple-choice questions: all the points assigned to the various answers selected had to be added.
In the case of the third question, there is a variation in the aggregation of points. Supposing all the data on the number of people in transit given by the experts is accurate. In that case, the final indicator should be that number and then it would be normalized in another stage of the index-building process.
Data sources: Expert consultation
Comments and limitations: This indicator is more suitable for having a quantitative measure (number of people transiting) than a qualitative one. Therefore, the questionnaire includes qualitative (first question) and quantitative (second question) measures. The numbers given by experts should be compared to other sources to identify if they are a good approximation of the real numbers. If it is determined that there is poor data quality in the numbers, the qualitative measure should be used.
