What does this indicator measure?

Definition: This indicator measures the percentage of people living in rural conditions.

Calculation:

• Unit of measure: Rural population
• Formula:

Numerator: # of rural people in a territory.

Denominator: Total population that lives in the territory.

• National census
• Official population projections

Comments and limitations: There is no international standard of the definition of rural areas or rural populations. The recommendation from the World Bank is to use the definition of the rural population that the national statistical offices use.
