Difference between Via the free version and the unlimited (academic) version.

by Jinkai Zhou on 2017-06-24 15:50:22

We are running a New York City scenario with a population file containing about 20,000 people. After getting the simulation results, we would like to visualize it in Via. Is it more accurate to display such simulation in the free version or the unlimited version in terms of analysis. Because we are not sure if 500 agents is enough for our simulation when loaded to Via since we haven't used the unlimited version before. So we don't know in terms of analysis, it will be different as well.

In the free version of Via, you can only see the first 500 agents/vehicles being loaded, all others will be ignored. This also means, you will only see at most 500 vehicles moving around (PT vehicles also have a driver in MATSim's simulation and are thus also counted against that 500 limit). To visually analyze a scenario this will likely not be enough, as for example you will not be able to see where traffic jams occur. Some of the included analyses like intersection flows or detailed volumes on a single link will not fully work because they are based on the loaded vehicle trajectories—but as only 500 trajectories will be loaded, they have incomplete data to operate on.

The academic license of Via includes all available plugins, like Map Backgrounds, Public Transport, Car Counts and Movie Recorder. Depending on your exact scenario, it will thus allow to analyze much more, e.g. comparisons with counting stations, occupancy and delay of public transport vehicles, etc.

Note: Being the author of Via, my opinion may be one-sided   If other's want to chime in with their experience, I'd welcome that.
