Synthesizer hold note '-' sequence behaves like rest

Hi,

I've programmed my synthesizer and I'm finding that when I use the - character to specify a note should be held, it's being treated like a rest character (.). When I switch these notes to rests nothing changes, in either case there's just a silent quarter note in the playback.
