skip/only download specified extension?

i.e. only download .jpg, or skip .pngs. Is there functionality for this?

--help shows only shows file size filter or --no-download

Try something like
gallery-dl --filter 'extension == "jpg"'
gallery-dl --filter 'extension != "png"'

gallery-dl -K will list all the keys that you can filter by for that URL.
