Overview

WorkGround (wg) is a console tool that helps saving the currently open programs and files as a WorkGround and provides the ability to reopen all of them later with only one command.

Installation (For Windows)

To install wg on your computer you can either download the excutables wg.exe and wgbgService.exe from here or fork the project and compile it yourself using visual studio to get the same two executables. Note that after compiling the project rename WGs.exe to wg.exe

After downloading the executables you can either copy both of them into any folder and then run command prompt from that folder to be able to executethe commands normally. Or, recommended, copy wgbgService.exe to C:\Users\moha9\ and wg.exe to C:\Program Files\WorkGround-beta-v1.0.0 where you will make a new folder called wg. Finally, you need to set up the environment variables. Find Edit the system environment variables from search or computer -> settings -> advanced settings . Click on Environment Variables... then from the bottom panel find Path select it and click Edit... -> New then add C:\Program Files\WorkGround-beta-v1.0.0\ there then save and exit. Notice the \ at the end of the path.

The main cocept explained

The main motivation for making this tool is to cut down on the time spent reopening programs and files that are usually used togather. Also, to make it easier to get back to work after restarting the PC for updates or after the "blue death screen".

Real life example

Let's take, for example, a CS student, who studies math sometimes and develops c++ apps othertimes. So when studying math he would open the WorkGround named MATH102 which opens a calculus book on a pdf reader, professor leonard youtube channel, and the homework website on the browser, and maybe a scientific calculator program as well. However, when coding, he would switch to the WorkGround called CODETIME which would open VSCODE and his github page and c++ docs page on the browser and some music on media player.

Here wg makes all this happen with only one command : wg switch MATH102 CODETIME

Usage

  • wg add wgName,taskName,taskPath \\ adds a task (Program) to a WorkGround
  • wg add wgName, taskName, fileName, filePath \\ adds a file to be opened with the specified task (program)
  • wg run wgName
  • wg swich currentWG,otherWG
  • wg capture wgName \\ adds the currently open applications (not system ones) to a workground
  • wg filter wgName(+1,4-7,12,15) \\ deletes all tasks in a workground but the ones specified
  • wg filter wgName(-1,4-7,12,15) \\ same as above but deletes the ones specified and keeps everything else
