How to Join Two Strings Like a Directory Path and File Name?

I'm trying to figure out how to join two strings, specifically when combining a directory path with a file name. Operators like plus and minus work for arithmetic, but how to join strings? i have no idea. For example, i have:-
dir="C:\Users\MyUser\Documents" file="report.txt"
can i use this?
path = dir + "\" + file
i don't seem to find any function in str part of docs which can do this.
