NEAR Ready Layer One Hackathon Prize: Accessibility Hack

Prize Bounty

1000 DAI

Challenge Description

We want to see hacks for people that aren’t as mobile or can’t leave their homes, but still deserve the same access to activities, resources and food.

A successful hack

  • The application must be sufficiently simple that it can be used by elderly people, either by themselves or through an intermediary person like a relative.
  • The application follows usability standards; considering the human interface guidelines and ux checklist by GitHub.
  • The application solves a problem specific to someone who can't leave their homes easily, either in general or due to the ongoing outbreak.

Start by cloning one of the examples in our online IDE here
Follow this guide to get to a head start.

Submission Requirements

Please make sure that your submission addresses the following criteria:

  • A working link to a demo of the application is required for submission
  • Open source code must be submitted with the demo to be considered
  • Submitted by the deadline
  • Be the original work of an individual participant or a group project
  • Built utilizing NEAR protocol

Additionally, we want to see some insights into your thought process that went into the idea generation and application development. Each submission will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Submission Deadline

The hackathon will take place from May 6th to May 12th. The submission deadline is May 19th at 23:59 PM CET.

Judging Criteria

An asynchronous panel of engineers will judge your hack. They will rate your project on a scale from 1-5 on the following grades.

  • Conformation to challenge (E.g. how well does it solve the proposed problem)
  • Practicality in the real world
  • Originality and innovation
  • Technicality of implementation
  • Design and usability
The prize will go to one application that best meets the listed criteria.
Your application can qualify for several prizes.

Winner Announcement Date

Hacks will be reviewed immediately at the end of the hackathon. We will announce winners within 48 hours of the end of the hackathon, but likely sooner. All winners will be announced in one group.

Work has been started.

These users each claimed they can complete the work by 1 year, 9 months ago.
Please review their action plans below:

1) x5engine has started work.

I will build a nice app with an intuitive interface that can be used by elderly people, either by themselves or through an intermediary person like a relative.
2) thecydonian has started work.

I intend on creating a solution for image to text to speech that is usable for persons with extreme eyesight issues.

I have a grandmother with macular degeneration, and, while a simple solution where a camera outputs to a large monitor used to work, it does not anymore as her eyesight has become much worse. Reading used to be one of her favorite activities, but now she can only use audio for the most part. To read her mail, she needs someone to help her. My project will combine hardware and software to help her and people with similar issues become more self sufficient.
3) bdev07 has started work.

Plan to build a block chain voting application with accessibility in mind:
Create a simple react app with rust near contract backend that counts votes from one poll.
Setup backend so app connects to one account to make vote to contract.
Setup frontend with easy to follow steps for making your vote.

4) sarangparikh22 has started work.

My application powered by NEAR Protocol helps people travel around with ease. I have created a Move Pass that can be obtained for allowance of travel across the city. This will help us to reduce congestion. The pass can be approved by legal authorities. I have also created a system where people can easily create DAOs and Campaigns and can raise funds in need. The system is so created that anyone can come and create a fundraising campaign in just few clicks. I have also built a Scheme and Stimulus Distribution system Together the entire system bring Financial and Social Inclusion.

The description said a demo link is necessary, but I have multiple parts to my project so I just explained how to view each part or run locally is explained in the readme for the repo I submitted. If you need anything else to be done, just let me know.

This was an awesome hackathon, and while my task was fairly ambitious, I now have a final product for something I have been meaning to create for while. Because NEAR was a requirement, I had to come up with ideas with blockchain tech that I think made my project much better, so thank you.

@SkidanovAlex I saw that someone opened my demo web page, so I made a couple smart contract calls to queue some images to transcribe. If it gave a message that there was no images to transcribe before, I had already solved them all giving demos to my friends. That should not be an issue now.

You can also make request calls from the jupyter notebook if you run out and want to try it again.

Also, I am hosting the demo from my laptop, so I'll try my best to keep it up, but sometimes I close my laptop from muscle memory. Just running node server.js -p 8000 in the web directory in my repo, should definitely work though.
