Compiling the Sneakers theme

Hi

I purchased the Sneakers theme and I am trying to make some changes to the styling etc. but now when I build the theme using npm run dev / prod whatever, I am now getting an error in the console

TypeError: $.request is not a function. (In '$.request()', '$.request' is undefined)

If I move the JS assets provided with the theme it 'works' but I want to be able to build and make changes.

Version OctoberCMS 3.4.16
