Feature Request: auto-detect certain machine configurations

There are certain machine configuration that should be auto-detected by the harness. For example, it should be possible to detect when a machine is x86_64.
If autodetection isn't working or if the user doesn't want to use it, the user-set parameter should override any autodetected setting.
