The name 'index file' reflexts the initial idea that it is the file that should be served by the AM Read Proxy by default if the URL of the asset (rather than a specific file) is requested.

However, this behaviour was ultimately not implemented, due to concerns about performance, and the fact that running a worker would cause a different file to be served from the same URL.

The name 'index file' is therefore misleading.

@jamesscottbrown, unless what is picked as an "index file" is not an index file of a webapp or not the DZI spec etc, there is nothing wrong in keeping this behaviour as-is. The read proxy may or may not serve the "index file". That has nothing to do with the UX of the AM. We may overcome performance limitations in the future and at such a point in time this can be revisited.
