Add drag and drop support #316
Comments
Usually, drag and drop works for applications that have a specific content area to receive the drop action. In Rufus, I'm not sure it'd be that intuitive to let the drop action apply to anything else but the small disc icon... which might make it tricky to use. That's because, besides images, I have some plans to support selecting folders at one stage (#76 - already 2 years old), and I'm not sure if this will be through a new button, or something else. I'd rather the whole folder/image selection feature completed, before I start to look into improving on it. In short, such a feature will be very low on my priority list, because it doesn't add much of anything that Rufus doesn't already provide, and there are still plenty of non currently existing features that I still want to add. Also see here. I will leave this Enhancement Request open, but it's unlikely I'll do much about it before at least another year (most likely 2). |
Why not support drag & dropping onto the entire Rufus window and have that automatically/make active the iso/folder in the list/settings? Also, if you drop an iso onto Rufus and it's not set for bootable it should automatically select settings needed for it to boot and perhaps grey out (but not disable) the format options and other settings available that are not suitable to be bootable. That would make the enhancement much more worthwhile from a productivity viewpoint. |
@cookieboyeli that sound even better. Let the whole Rufus window support drop. Then you can drop the ISO everywhere :) |
As I said, I'm not planning to dismiss this feature. But I will keep it as very low priority. From a productivity viewpoint, completing commandline support (#111) would be a lot more helpful than drag and drop (it's been requested from various people, and for quite some time), so drag and drop will only happen after I have completed these and other features... which, realistically, is is unlikely to happen for another year or two. I wish I could just drop everything else and add the latest Enhancement Request being logged on github, but that's just not going to happen. (Also I looked into drag and drop a few months ago, and the takeway I got was that it was yet another Windows functionality that one expects to be super easy to add, and that is anything but. Not that I do mind, but it means I'll need to set some time aside). |
I don't mind if this enhancement request takes a long time to get to, I'm just glad you're keeping it open and giving a realistic ETA of when you can get to it. I know I'd be a little frustrated if you worked on every new request right away because that would push other planned features such as #260 & #126 further out. |
Will need this ( |

It would be great if i could drag and drop ISO images on the button instead of browsing inside Rufus. You often have the ISO already in front of you on your desktop or Explorer, so why browse one more time when it's much easier to drop it on the selection button?
