@thrud00 thrud00 Apologies for this, can you share the problematic JSON? we heard about this issue with XML and could not reproduce it. if you could share the JSON it would help us to reproduce the issue and fix it

Hi thanks for the reply.

I've attached 2 json files which produce the same error. There's a "*-resave.json" version of each which was just opened in Brackets and then a simple "Save As...".

I also get the same effect with some received Lua files. So I've attached a zip file with one of those also.

I have so far been unable to repro this issue with the given files.

1. Mac os version, intel/m1 mac?
2. What is the file system in use? is there anything special about the os/file system/file being generated. For eg. non-english os.

Hi apologies, I was looking at the bottom of the thread for replies not on each entry.

This Mac is an M1 running Sequoia 15.4

Nothing special about the file system just whatever is the default install. So the json and lua files that don't work are all received via email. I'm trying to find out which editors and OSs. They open just fine in Brackets, but not PC. I've also just tested on an Intel Mac with a brand new install of PC. Same result. And as before, opens from File --> Open, but not from Finder.

Looks like a bug in phoenix code way we handle file open. We were able to reproduce it . Thanks for reporting

Thanks. Just some additional info. It appears the json and lua file that wouldn't open are from Windows running VS Code. Once opened in Brackets and saved with "Save As..." they open from Finder without a problem. So it's not handling the encoding from Windows or VS Code as well as Brackets does.

This might be related to encoding or filename issues that Phoenix Code doesn't yet handle perfectly on macOS. If you can help us reproduce it with your setup or a sample file, we can get this fixed quickly.

could you please share the following info?

1. File Encoding

What is the encoding of the file? (e.g. UTF-8, UTF-16, ANSI, etc.)

2. File Name

Does the file name contain any non-English, Unicode, or special characters? (e.g., emojis, Chinese etc.)

Example: config_日本語.json

3. File Path

What is the full file path? Are there any spaces, symbols, or Unicode characters in the folder names?

Example: /Users/john/Downloads/test file/config.json

4. How You Open It

Does the problem happen with:

1. Double-click the JSON file in Finder?

2. Drag and drop it into Phoenix Code?

3. Use "Open With" > Phoenix Code?

This helps us understand which code path is being triggered. Thanks for helping.

1. They all appear to us-ascii.
2. Not as far as I can see.
3. I've stried various locations all give the same, currently they are in /Users/steve.vickers/temp
4. Well this is where it gets interesting. I hadn't thought about until you asked. I get the error when double clicking or right-click and select "Open with..". However, if I use File --> Open Files... from within PC it opens just fine. I never knew you could drag and drop, but that works fine also. So it seems to be just when opening from Finder.
