Hi there. I didn't know any way to contact you, so I thought I'd ask here.

With Ubuntu Studio transitioning to KDE Plasma, and with the KDE integration this application has, I figured it would be a perfect fit to be included in Ubuntu Studio. There are a number of people who use Ubuntu Studio professionally in both live and recorded performances, so something like this would be a perfect fit.

However, I noticed your last release is over 3 years old. Is this project abandoned? Reason for the question is that it's incredibly difficult to package an application and distribute it when there's no upstream support. When new versions of the underlying structure change (KDE Frameworks updates, Carla updates, etc.) bugs can get introduced.

My question is if you have any interest in updating this project further? To me, it seems like it has a lot of potential, and I'd rather not see something like this die. I'm not a programmer and have a lot on my plate already, so adopting a project like this is out of the question for me, but I wanted to see where you were at to gauge whether or not I should attempt packaging in Ubuntu.

Thanks!

Hi!
You're right, I didn't update this for a while now...
I'm mostly using Windows these days, as I have to use it for my day job.

If there is interest in live performance tools for Linux, I might look into it again. This would probably be a full rewrite.
If you want to help, you could try to gather some information:

  • who would be interested in using this kind of software?
  • what features are missing?
  • are there bugs I'm not aware of?

I could add you as a collaborator and we could collect some ideas in the wiki.

Sorry, I've been in the process of relocating over the past few days.

I would say there is absolutely an interest in live performance tools for Linux, period. What I would really love to see is a replacement for Apple Mainstage. Additionally, my background is in live audio engineering, so a project such as this is greatly appealing from a live performance support standpoint.

To answer your questions:

  • People who wish to replace Apple Mainstage or perhaps even have something better would be interested in this kind of software for sure.
  • I'm not sure which features are missing, but I have yet to actually build it. When it comes to that, I like to kill two birds with one stone and actually build/package at the same time, if for no other reason than to make it easier on myself to submit to Ubuntu's archive admins.
  • I'm not sure if there are actually any bugs, but again, I have yet to actually build it. The only thing I'm concerned with at the moment is compatibility with the latest versions of Carla.

I'd be happy to collaborate on this. Do note that my actual coding skills are slim to none and that my expertise is mostly in UX and Packaging. I usually mention it first thing, but I'm the guy leading Ubuntu Studio and Fedora Jam currently.

I'll be on vacation for the next week, but I'll see if I can build and run Performer in Ubuntu Studio when I'm back. I'll also check what needs to be done to bring it to a somewhat future-proof state.
