I'm in too.
But am I eligible for mentoring? Being under 18?
I think participants is 18+.. Don't know about mentoring
|
If there is a condition that a person can not become GSOC mentor and participant both then i would first become a participant and maybe next year i can become a mentor. |
At a time either a person can be a GSoC mentor OR a student. If you are
commenting here this means you are sure to be mentor.
Dhiraj great to see you as a mentor.
Oorjit can you please check GSoC official guidelines?

who all will be willing to mentor?
I mentioned you all as for some of you it is difficult to see this call
for mentors in list of 500 issues.
Please leave a comment soon so that mentors can assign projects to
themselves and start working on the proposals with the potential mentees.
It will be great if you can tell this asap.
Alright, count me in for the same and i really need this.

Yes, I am willing to be a mentor @SidharthBansal . Sorry for misspelling your name earlier. |
Please kindly let me know If I can be of any help. I would love to be a part of the mentor's team, Thanks. |
@SidharthBansal I would like to participate as GSoC student. |
Hi, all! I noticed we didn't hear a confirmation from @oorjitchowdhary @Paarmita @codeIriss @rbhatia46 @asquare14 @Dhiraj240 @bhavayAnand9 @madhavsarpal100, but we are still interested in having more mentors if you are able to complete the requirements and fill out the form! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd-4xwxlCdYFGYklds3sTb21LR1nlF5oWJnLA73LZlGyWag3g/viewform Thank you so much!!! |
This year I applied as a participant for coala where I applied for 2 projects but I was unable to get a slot there. I had in mind to apply for Public Lab as a backup for "spectral workbench proposal" but it was hectic for me and that laziness shattered me. |
@jywarren I am sorry for being inactive in the last few months. I had some other commitments, however I am free now and would love to be a mentor. Thank you for giving me another opportunity. Shall fill up the form asap ! Here are my all time statistics and I have also filled up the form with the latest details. Issues opened : https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/issues/created_by/aSquare14 |

@jywarren I also apologize as I was busy with end-sem exams. Thanks for another opportunity. I have filled up the form. Kindly check. |
@jywarren Sorry for being inactive from last two months as I was not able to apply as student this year due to some commitments but i would definitely love to mentor and have completed the requirements. |
No problem. I hope you all were able to complete your commitments
completely.
You can still fill in the mentorship forms. Thanks

@jywarren when will list of mentors be announced ? |
I'm sending invitations now! I did note that the form wasn't as specific as the requirements listed at the top -- it just asked for 2 FTO URLs. But actually the first is one you SOLVED and the second one is one you POSTED for someone else to solve. I'd love if those who didn't add the 2nd type could either re-fill the form or leave a comment here with the extra URL. Thanks! |
OK, i went through the list - thanks all! Once you accept I'll add you to the right teams and assign projects (and this can be changed too, later!) I held off on 2-3 because of the ambiguity in the form, for which I apologize - if people who didn't get an invite could check and really look to be sure they've /created/ a first-timers-only issue, and reviewed someone else's PR, and provide those links, that'd be great. You don't have to resubmit the ones you already submitted - just put "ALREADY SUBMITTED" and just add in the ones that were missing. Thanks and apologies for our not having completely clear instructions on the form! You're all very close to the requirements, i just want to be sure everyone has a good understanding of how first-timers-only issues are made and what are the necessary ingredients to support people and welcome them in this way! I'm happy to answer questions and there is more documentation at the very top of this post. Thank you! And, apologies again for taking so long to complete this! |
@jywarren Thank You, sir, I have received it and accepted it too. Waiting to get the "spectral workbench" project get assigned. |
@jywarren Sir , I am waiting for the invitation . |
@jywarren Thanks for the invite. I have used a different email address([email protected]) to signup as a mentor. I am looking forward to help with the projects associated with Image Sequencer and the sensor data upload library project. |
@jywarren Signed up as well ! |
@jywarren @SidharthBansal Waiting for mentor ship invitation. Will love to help Gsoc Students as I helped GCI students. |
Hi @sk9331657, as mentioned by @jywarren please check that you've got all the details correct. Thanks!
|
Hi all! Closing here and moving to: |
Hi, all! New call for mentors for 2020 is up here! #7360 |
With Rails Girls Summer of Code and Google Summer of Code 2019 coming up, we're looking ahead to who may be interested in mentoring for these programs. We have participated in both during the past few years, and while we are not guaranteed spots, we are planning to apply as an organization.
Read some of last year's proposals here, and participate in project idea brainstorming here. If one of the project ideas strikes your interest, please mention it!
We especially welcome people from groups underrepresented in free and open source software!
It's very important to us to have diverse representation in our mentor group just as in our participant group. And remember -- our community aspires to be a respectful place. Please read and abide by our Code of Conduct.
To participate:
This year, we're asking that mentors have taken some of the following steps to be part of our community:
fto-candidate
orsupport
, these issues may require little more work, but we'll try to help.gci-candidate
neither asfto-candidate
nor asfirst-timer-only
. Provide link to such issues' merged PR.(Make sure you claim the issue first by commenting on issue you are planning to solve)
Mentors check in with a student at least once per week roughly from May-August, and offer some project management guidance and encouragement... while relying on the chatroom and the @publiclab/reviewers group to provide code-specific input, so that we share the burden of specific technical support. We have weekly Check-Ins on GitHub (#4548) as well, and mentors are expected (along with students!) to be in the rotation to post these occasionally.
Remember that to be a mentor you don't necessarily need to know how to code -- we also need mentors who know Public Lab's community and practices well, and who can encourage students to speak up when they get stuck, and to ask the community for input and testing of their work. Students often get stuck when they don't know how something should look, or how a feature might be used by the community -- contextual info!
If you're interested in being a mentor, leave a comment here -- and read over our software outreach resources to get an idea of how we work!
Some key resources on mentoring:
Thanks a lot, and we're happy to answer questions!
