When ReDBox dataset records are in a state where the librarian/curator believes they are ready for publication, it is often useful to have the chief investigator or other researcher review the collection metadata. Currently this can be achieved by taking screenshots and sending them as attachments to the researcher. An alternative method might be to add a feature which permits preview of a dataset metadata record prior to publication via a temporary URL.
Example
In a new 'Preview' tab (or perhaps the 'Submit' tab) allow the user to:
Enable preview (of an unpublished dataset record)
Select either a duration (eg. N hours, N days, N weeks, N months) or an expiry date/time
for which a temporary URL shall be displayed which will permit a preview of the dataset until either:
the selected duration expires, or
the user disables the preview
The curator can email this temporary URL to the researcher.
Notes:
In a similar way that Embargoed records are displayed on the Home page (for those with a login) Preview records could also be displayed on the Home page.
Each time a user enables the preview feature for a record, it should use a different temporary URL.
Perhaps the preview feature (& any corresponding temporary URL) should be automatically disabled when a dataset is published?
I feel the preview should be visible without a login.
I feel the preview should show all metadata fields which will become public after publication (via OAI-PMH) and not be limited to the lesser set of metadata visible to guest users after publication. Eg. After publication, none of the Management tab metadata is visible to guest users, whereas we would want the preview to show "Location, URL" and "Location, Stored At" since these will become public fields. Alternatively allow ReDBox app admins to configure the metadata which is shown for preview.
