The changelog specifies we use standard-version for version releases. This however seems deprecated. Should we rethink this decision?

+1 https://github.com/googleapis/release-please pointed by standard-version seems like replacement worth trying.

Iiuc release-please seems to require some changes to our current release process. An alternative would be switching to https://github.com/absolute-version/commit-and-tag-version.
