Question about the integration layer

I'm looking at the customer integration model, and it looks like one of the purposes is to merge customers from various sources -- eg. hubspot, stripe, etc.

But isn't the model grouping by the customer_id, where customers coming from different sources would have different customer ids? How is merging the same customer from different sources performed?
