what does MapboxGL.setAccessToken do exactly?

i am implementing mapbox in my app and i want to know what difference does this method make, because the map loads even if i dont set it.

my intent was to change the access token programatically to control which of our clients is making the most requests or use their accounts tokens so they can manage it themselves
but since the map loads either way, i am confused of how it works

MapboxGL.setWellKnownTileServer("Mapbox");
