I'm unsure of the original reason for using /var/spool but according to the FHS it seems not to be the correct.

Looking at my directory structure, /var/db seems like a more appropriate location (but I don't know if this is a standard directory).

FHS doesn't have /var/db. The proper hierarchy for this file (and it bothers me too) is /var/lib. PostgreSQL, for example, creates its databases under /var/lib/postgresql (at least on Debian).
