DHCPv6-Client repeatedly fails with Event ID 1005, effecting internet performance #1161
Comments
@digital-terra can you pleas provide an up to date debug info thanks! |
Hey @digital-terra, thank you for raising this issue with us. After a first review we noticed that we will require the Debug Info for further investigation. However, you haven't supplied any Debug Info in your report. Please collect Debug Info from Portmaster while the reported issue is present. |
Here's a up-to-date debug. When I first logged on today, I was getting hit with those errors again. I was looking at the debug info in PM and saw some entries from my ISP with WPAD (Web Proxy Auto-Discovery). I just disabled "Automatic Proxy" in Windows network settings, as it's enabled by default. I rebooted, checked Event Viewer, and there were no errors for DHCPv6. I will routinely check the Event Viewer for further errors and give updates on this thread. This debug is from my 2nd bootup after turning off Automatic Proxy. Posting it as it still holds some errors about connecting/resolving. Hope this helps. Version 1.5.1

I see that you have mullvad installed as well, we know that there can be compatibility issues with that. Some of their Updates work, and other don't. Can you confirm that you have the same issues without mullvad? |
I haven't used or signed into Mullvad on this Windows install. I believe it's just the daemon running in the background but I can uninstall it and see if that makes any difference. |
I've completely uninstalled Mullvad, the issue is still occurring. Here is another updated debug. Version 1.5.1

What happened:
While Portmaster is running, it fails to establish a connection through IPv6. In the Windows Event Viewer, there are many warnings referencing DHCPv6-Client with Event ID 1005 and a few referencing TCPIP errors with the ID 4199. I am not sure if this is due to changing DNS settings using the documentation provided. I applied Quad9 for IPv4 and IPv6. Since then, I have switched back to default DNS settings in Portmaster with Cloudflare (no IPv6) and issues stop for some time but eventually start again.
Anything with italic uppercase "X" and "ABCD/WXYZ" is meant to represent IP numbers and to redact personal info.
Each DHCPv6-Client warning was made every 10-20 seconds for about 10 minutes, each entry with a slightly different IP address (it differed at the very end of the address, ie "XXXX:XX:X:XXXX::ABCD" > "XXXX:XX:X:XXXX::WXYZ". This warning's description is: Your computer has detected that the IP address XXXX:XX:X:XXXX::ABCD for the Network Card with network address 0x XXXXXXXXXXXX is already in use on the network. Your computer will automatically attempt to obtain a different address.
For the TCPIP error, it is saying there is a address conflict: The system detected an address conflict for IP address XXXX:XX:X:XXXX::ABCD with the system having network hardware address 00-00-00-00-00-00. Network operations on this system may be disrupted as a result.
All Portmaster settings other than DNS servers were on default. This is on a fresh install of Windows 11, updated to latest stable build 22621.1413. All drivers updated to current release. However, I have been experiencing this issue here and there on different Windows installs for a while now and do not see any noticeable fixes or issues listed on Portmaster's GitHub.
I have shutdown Portmaster and ran commands such as "ipconfig /flushdns" "ipconfig /release" "ipconfig /release6" "ipconfig /renew" "ipconfig /renew6" and rebooted the PC. I have also tried running these commands while Portmaster was open. Neither fixed the issue.
What did you expect to happen?:
For Portmaster to accept the DNS changes applied within Portmaster, with IPv4 and IPv6 working as intended.
How did you reproduce it?:
Changed DNS providers from default Cloudflare to Quad9 (both IPv4 and both IPv6 DNS servers) within Portmaster using the provided documentation. Issues started to show in Event Viewer shortly after using the browser and apps such as Spotify. This issue also occurred with Cloudflare (using both IPv4 and both IPv6 DNS listed in the Portmaster documentation.)
After additional observation, this issue may be happening on its own with default settings rather than when changing the DNS settings. Still unsure, but issue eventually occured with default DNS settings.
