Talk Title:
Every Byte Counts: Thinking about Sustainability on the Internet

Talk Description:

Shaving a couple of bytes off of your JavaScript might not seem like a worthwhile contribution to sustainability. But, a few extra bytes of bloat on a high-traffic website can scale enormously into tens of thousands of additional tons of CO2 emissions annually. There are many simple ways to reduce bloat when developing sites, and they usually align with best practices developers already know. The problem: best practices are often pushed aside to meet deadlines.

David Mahoney at Headless Horse is a PhD researcher in web sustainability at the University of Edinburgh. Together, we have been working on some tools and initiatives in this space. In my ten minutes, I would like to talk a little about the recent COP28 website debacle, how I think we can bring sustainable best practices for JS development into agency work, and do a lightning show-and-tell of some recent projects Headless Horse and I have been working on.
