superfluous escaped brackets in prompt and broken arrow key editing on bash

This is on MacOS with a much newer bash than Apple ships, 5.2.32(1)-release

I get the following for my prompt, and it also breaks arrow key based readline editing.

I think the escaped brackets serve no purpose in bash's $PS1
