base this work on some well established HTTP benchmark tool

I'd suggest refactoring this using components with more mileage, typically used to benchmark HTTP servers. Vegeta even has a separate library package that we could use, those tools also have some nice features like distributed attacks and drawing graphs. To my knowledge the best ones are

but we may do some more research.

I think this one is a bit too late for s-b,

one can still write a new tool as suggested above, but would need a very compelling reasons, which I don't think we currently have.
