Dear Sir/Madam of the Sekai Project staff,

I would like to start off my bug report by saying thank you for making Narcissu available for free on Steam.
I noticed the Early Access pop up when I was randomly browsing through the store.
I eventually decided to give it a shot and found it to be a very beautiful game.
I've never played games from this kind of genre before, and I thought it was a nice change of pace from the usual games that have become utterly boring.
I think Narcissu did very well in showing what living life with serious illness can be like.
I could relate to the characters very well, probably because I went through similar hardships in my life.
I found the music in Narcissu to be quite decent aswell.

Narcissu is important because it will be the only Visual Novel game on the Free to Play section on Steam, and because of that I wanted to be of help as much as possible.
It will be first of many people, and as such, it needs to leave a good impression.
I went and wrote down every part of the game I thought needed help or improvement down below.

Good luck Sekai Project, and please make Narcissu great!

  • Issue Some text sticking on screen for too long #1 Let's begin with the biggest problem I've had with the game.
While playing the game, I found it to be difficult to distinguish which characters were the ones speaking / thinking.
I was basically forced to wonder most of the time: "Who is speaking right now?" until later on in the story where everything becomes clear.
This is a big problem, because new audience who will be trying the game out for the first time will be left confused as to which character is actually the one speaking / thinking.
This can ruin the experience of the game and become a big turn off for people which will result in them abandoning the game.

Options
1: Add the name of the character somewhere near the text.
2: Apply a different color to each character's dialogue.

  • Issue mpeg support is in a broken state #2 When I was about to start the game, I had to choose between playing Narcissu and Narcissu: Side 2nd.
However, I did not get notified that Narcissu: Side 2nd was actually a prequel, so my first choice was Narcissu.
Because I did not get this information anywhere, I thought of Narcissu: Side 2nd as a follow up of the main story.
And because of that I started to believe that Himeko Sunohara was Setsumi Sakura in the beginning of the prequel.
This confusion came to an end later on after I read a review on Steam saying that Side 2nd was actually the prequel of Narcissu.
I think there should atleast be a notification somewhere stating that Side 2nd is a prequel.

Options
1: Add a notification in-game clearly stating that Side 2nd is a prequel.
2: Notify people in the store page that the game includes Narcissu and the prequel Narcissu: Side 2nd.

  • Issue SDL2 src should be packaged in extlibs correctly #3 The sound of rain in the 1st Narcissu is very loud and unbearable, it is not a pleasant sound to listen to at all.
Having said that, you may tell me to turn down my sound settings.
However, the sound of rain surpasses the volume of other sounds, such as the voice of Setsumi.
Every time she would speak I could barely hear her voice because of this loud and obnoxious sound of rain.
My recommendation is to lower the volume of the rain effect itself, or even better, remove the whole sound file and replace it with a more calm and relaxing sound of rain.
(EDIT: I took a look at the in-game sound configuration, and I feel a bit stupid now, but I still think the sound effect for rain is too loud and obnoxious. It may still be a better choice to completely replace it or just simply tone down the volume so it is on the same level as other special effects because it still is louder than any other.)
  • Bug Some text sticking on screen for too long #1 Mouse clicks are not as responsive as you would be on the keyboard.
Sometimes when I try to click my way to the next line, it will usually takes a few clicks to actually register and move on to the next scenery or text.
  • Bug mpeg support is in a broken state #2 When switching screens or chapters, the music stops immediately.
I'm not sure if this is a bug, but the music should be made to fade out for a smoother transition between scenes, doing this will probably improve the atmosphere of the game.
  • Bug SDL2 src should be packaged in extlibs correctly #3 Sometimes during a line of dialogue (on the voiced version of the game), the voice acting will not play as its supposed to, it stays silent.
  • Suggestion Some text sticking on screen for too long #1 Instead of having "Narcissu 1st & 2nd" as the name, I recommend changing it to just "Narcissu".
As I previously mentioned, I didn't know Narcissu: Side 2nd was a prequel.
The name didn't help me realise that either, but that is not the main reason why I think you should change the name.
I simply think "Narcissu" is way nicer without having the unnecessary information "1st & 2nd" included in the name.
Because you can easily put that information in the description of the Steam store page (ofcourse also including the statement that Side 2nd is a prequel.)

This concludes my bug report.
Thank you for taking the time to read it, I hope it has been useful in any way.

Thank you for your impressions and ideas. This issue contains a lot of information and I expect that individual issues will be split out by me / others to address individual points.

I'm personally mostly concerned with technical/engine bugs so I intend to address those.
The most obvious of those is your "Bug#1", the mouse clicks being unresponsive. I've split off an issue for that (#61).

The music fading issue is definitely a script issue. I've split off #62 to get the ball rolling on that.

Most of the other issues are script/asset issues, I think. Hopefully @dobacco will be able to address those and split off further issues where necessary.

Again, thanks!

Thank you for the response.

As we're just the translators for the original game, we would have to talk to the creator to see if we're allowed to implement changes such as adding who is speaking, editing the audio, and music adjustments.

There's also Narcissu 3rd -Die Dritte Welt- so we need to be specific on our namings.
