It is probably possible to figure out a way to divide an image into a regular grid of chunks and make it possible to decode any chunk. Is it possible to do this without inflating the metadata too much? The bigger the chunks, the less metadata. We also noted that bigger slices with more context get better compression ratios overall, so would this be self-defeating?
