Yes. Might be that it's not available on Linux as a whole, not just the Snap version

What is the overlay? Is it missing from the Linux version of Discord generally or just in the snap?

The overlay shows you in game who is speaking, a small Icon with a the name of the speaker pops out then. I don't know if discord does this too, but in mumble for example overlays for games, also change the direction where the voice comes from, depending on the in game position of the speaker.

Sadly even with .tar.gz Version from their website, there isn't an overlay option, it should be above Notifications. So I guess it isn't included in the Linux version.

guess we'd need to send a feature request to discord before this "issue" can even be addressed :p
tho i do suspect it might become a issue with the snap version

This'll work with the Snap version of Discord?

I'm not going to pretend to understand how the Sandboxing for Snap works, so I don't really know the answer to that - indeed, I'm only just researching how to distribute the above python script as a snap.

Just thought I'd chime in with our open source 3rd party Discord Overlay as it bridges the currently missing overlay feature from the Linux Discord client. Apologies if this was the wrong place to post, but I would certainly be very interested in getting this packaged in a way that can easily interact with the Discord Snap :D

perhaps it should shipped with the discord snap? then again the goal was to upstream the discord snap

FYI: https://github.com/trigg/Discover is the successor of this overlay. I'll change this bug into a feature request to add support for that overlay.
