The "save as default" button being hidden behind "create custom filter" is extremely misleading, not only because of how hidden it is but due to it indicating that you can't save the default sorting methods persistently (I only figured this out by brute force last resort method before heading for the config file).
As an example, I want gallery by size as default. You can't create such a rule in the rule filter (it already exists, that's beside the point). The default sorting methods aren't obviously filters, hence it's not obvious that you can save them, since the save button is located specifically in the custom filter tab. You also can't search for them in the save/set as default filter tab further indicating that only custom made filters can be set as default.
A few people have had issues with this, so adding some documentation or simply making the button more visible could help clear up confusion. Another thing that is not obvious (as in I don't know since I haven't tried) is if the save as default button will save all the sorting options, such as number of images to display.
Maybe break out the "save as default" button, add a default floppy drive/save icon and have it be it's own separate button, not hidden under a tiny unmarked drop down list that looks identical to the custom filter one to indicate that you can save both the default?
Alternatively, add a separate tab in the settings, maybe under interface, that that lets you alter the default values of the UI config through a GUI instead of an text editor (kind of how it's usually set up in most applications really).
