I'm trying to use ~/parent/Backup as the backup location (remotely mounted fs). Whenever I try to run backup-manager, I get an error message "mkdir: cannot create directory ‘/home/nivek1385/parent’: Permission denied" but that entire path already exists.

Are you sure the user running backup-manager has the appropriate permissions?
Could you provide the relevant output of the command ran using debug mode?
