I don't know what plans you have for the mod, but drones system from Factorio would be awesome. If requesting by player and buffer chests and construction robots are too much, then just adding provider and requester chests would considerably improve the drone experience.

I'm currently working on flying drones (spoiler? XD) for something like this. They will probably have a set end and start point and they will fly between those. But I may be able to also add requester and provider chests.

Update: got a system for drone networks working. Now have to implement the requester and provider chest logic.

Update: still planning on doing this but currently working on a 1.13.2 update
