Why do we have so many reloads by vite?

Our team is struggling with this happening all the time:

[vite] ✨ optimized dependencies changed. reloading

Do you also struggle with this - and what solutions do you know of?

What do you mean all the time? This isn't supposed to happen that often, from my experience it's mostly when notable changes are made to file imports. This is not supposed to be more than an slight occasional annoyance. Maybe a problem with one of you dependencies. Try erasing .svelte-kit folder.

If I serve our svelte-kit application and navigate around it will eventually reload. Erasing .svelte-kit folder does not help.

@gterras do you know exactly when the reload is supposed to happen?

From my experience it will happen the first time you start app in dev mode after fresh npm install. What is really annoying though that the app will become completely unresponsive during this process. I get it has to optimize dependencties, but why not tell me before it does that? Because right now the developer experience is

1. start the app
2. click something, navigate
3. click something else - app completely unresponsive
4. 2 minutes pass and you're greeted with all happy message:

[vite] ✨ new dependencies optimized: pocketbase
[vite] ✨ optimized dependencies changed. reloading

well thanks, but why not tell me when you start optimizing and not after you already finish?

Vite allows you to configure which dependencies should be pre-bundled earlier or not at all: https://vitejs.dev/guide/dep-pre-bundling.html#customizing-the-behavior

Both include and exclude can be used to deal with this. If the dependency is large (with many internal modules) or is CommonJS, then you should include it; If the dependency is small and is already valid ESM, you can exclude it and let the browser load it directly.

because vite is horrible, they benchmark 1 thing that takes 1 second and don't benchmark the thing that takes 2 minutes
