MIDS Element - 10. GeologicalAge #61
Comments
MIDS level 2, I would say chronostratigraphy (from and to i.e., Miocene to Pliocene) should be mandatory for palaeontological objects and to the most granular level available. Minimum of one of these: and one of these: Recommended that aligns with International Commission on Stratigraphy chart Recommended that litho- and biostratigraphy, where available, should also be provided |
This needs input from the Geological and Palaeontological community. |
For the sample location stratigraphic context, need to distinguish lithostratigraphy (correlation of rock bodies base on similar lithology and lithology of overlying and underlying units), biostratigraphy (correlation of rock bodies base on similar fossil assemblages), and chronostratigraphy (correlation based on known or inferred depositional age). All of these are subject to various caveats and exceptions |
I would propose that chronostratigraphy is essential at MIDS 2 level for palaeontological specimens and that including lithostratigraphy and/or biostratigraphy is highly recommended (but not essential) at this level |
In my first comment on 29th September 2022, I forgot the following 2 terms as part of core terms for mids2: dwc: earliestEonOrLowestEonothem |
I would suggest definition to be: Terms denoting the names of strata and/or their age from which a specimen is derived I would suggest purpose to be: To provide geological context to the specimen |
From meeting on 13 July 2023: Term name updated |
