I only tested this on linux with memfd_create (added in linux 3.17). I added some try: except so that it should work on old linux, but it's not tested.
This adds a new dependency (pymemfd) but only on linux; I don't know how to encode it for pip. This is left as future work.
If you are interested in merging this PR, I'll spend some more time polishing this sort of "details".
