General HTML attributes

is it possible to use html attributes (like in Pandoc) ? For example:

[some_url](description){rel="nofollow" id="mmm"}

or

![alt_text](img_src){id="mmm" class="xyz" width="200" height="300"}

This feature request would be extremely common for a library that handles markdown, but why hasn't anyone responded?

For example, "Python-markdown" has a similar functionality: it can be used to create a markdown file.
