"mathematical tool" doesn't refer to a physical tool (a hammer, a saw) or a software tool (an application) but a set of mathematical formulae and their algorithmic implementation/approximation. In this instance, it refers to mathematical models describing how light behaves in the real world, and methods of implementing these models in a program.
